Mobile first - Front-end development for eBingo
Veikkaus had a clear vision to refresh the old eBingo and bring it to up to date. The refreshment was supposed to touch only the visual appearance of the UI but ended up being a much bigger project.
You have done a world class job on bringing the user interface of eBingo to this century. The clarity and UX development of the new eBingo is on a whole new level compared to any other bingos out there.— Asko Heiskanen, Business Unit Manager at Veikkaus
From Design sprint to scrum based development project
The project started with a 5-Day Design Sprint in May 2017. A team of six professionals was gathered together, and they were to design a new front-end to the old eBingo. The team consisted of both in-house and external developers and designers, including Tuija from Intergalactico. The goal for the design sprint was to get rid of all the unnecessary elements, the clutter. “We ended up reducing the elements from around 20 to 4 or 5 most crucial ones.” After the design sprint, the team had a prototype for the game and it was tested on real users. The development itself started in the end of 2017 in agile 2-week sprints. “We used the Scrum model throughout the development phase”, explains Antti.
With development well under way using Incremental DOM as the chosen UI library, there was a decision from the client that the go-to front-end framework would eventually be changed to Preact. “After all, the client wanted to modernize the front-end alongside to redesign the UIs for mobile and desktop. This of course took more time and effort but was definitely worth it” explains Tuija.
Finally, after 7 months of hard work, the new eBingo was released. The Business Unit Manager of Veikkaus, Asko Heiskanen was extremely happy with the results: “You have done a world class job on bringing the user interface of eBingo to this century. The clarity and UX design of the new eBingo is on a whole new level.” Before the project, over 60% of the players entered the game through desktop. After the renewal mobile and tablet users has risen to over 50% of which some 40% percent is purely through mobile.
