We’ve helped Veikkaus with their online games: eBingo, RoBoom! and RoBoom! Galaksi. With eBingo, our goal was to provide a modern experience for a classic game, whereas with RoBoom! and RoBoom Galaksi, our goal was to create something that didn’t exist before: a gamified lottery ticket with story-driven gameplay. Read more about all three projects below.
eBingo: bringing a classic to the 21st century
Veikkaus wanted to give the old eBingo a makeover. Eventually, the project became much bigger than that. Work started at a 5-day Design Sprint in May 2017, where the goal was to get rid of all the unnecessary elements, the clutter. The team consisted of both in-house and external developers, including Intergalactico designers.
We reduced the elements in eBingo’s user interface from around 20 to 4-5 most crucial ones. After the design sprint, the team had a prototype for the game and it was tested on real users. The development itself started at the end of 2017 in agile 2-week sprints. We used the Scrum model throughout the development phase.
With development well under way with Incremental DOM as the chosen UI library, there was a decision from the client that the go-to front-end framework would eventually be changed to Preact.
After all, the client wanted to modernize the front-end in addition to redesigning the UIs for mobile and desktop. This of course took more time and effort, but was definitely worth it.

After 7 months of hard work, the new eBingo was released. The Business Unit Manager of Veikkaus Asko Heiskanen was extremely happy with the results.
You have done a world class job with bringing the user interface of eBingo to this century. The clarity and UX design of the new eBingo is on a whole new level.

RoBoom! and RoBoom! Galaksi: transforming lottery tickets with gamification
Veikkaus had an abstract idea for a game. They were looking for a visually exciting lottery ticket with casual game-play and a clear concept. The precondition for the game was that it should have explosions.
When talking with [Intergalactico designers], the concept quickly developed into exploding robots, which we liked.

We set out to create a gamified lottery ticket with striking visuals and a maximized random-factor. The top priority was to simultaneously provide excitement, thrill and game-like suspense.
Spoiler: the end result RoBoom! was an instant success. And as with any successful release, a sequel was quickly in order. We decided to take gamification one step further and create our most ambitious lottery ticket yet: RoBoom! Galaksi.
The new RoBoom! Galaksi was built on top of its predecessor. There was no reason to touch the core mechanics or the visuals since they were tested and proven. We focused mainly on expanding the gameplay and story mechanics together with a richer, more meaningful soundscape. The end result is a multi-level space odyssey, with 500 levels and a continuous story line.
The first RoBoom! continues to be one of the most successful lottery tickets issued by Veikkaus. Its sequel takes the proven concept one step further, by creating a more complex and story-driven world around the gameplay. These types of games generate over 400 million euro turnover annually.
The Intergalactico team created a wonderful sci-fi world with comic book style and a funny story that is full of jokes and easter eggs from movies and other classic sci-fi stories. The result was much more than we expected, I guess it’s no surprise that it found a player profile of young men, a very interesting target group for Veikkaus.
